I rented a medium sized car but was lucky to get a free upgrade and got a Ford Escape which was perfect for our family of five. I paid $152 for 9 days and considering that I would have paid a shuttle $60 just to take my family from the airport to the hotel and another $50 from the hotel to the airport, that alone almost paid for the rental. We went to Chichen Itza, Playa del Carmen, Isla Mujeres, downtown Cancun and all along the hotel zone. It was just nice to be driving in an air conditioned vehicle while everybody else was riding public transportation without air conditioning in a place that was 90 degrees with 85%+ humidity in August. Altogether, we drove over 600 miles but since the vehicle had unlimited miles, we didn't have to pay anything extra. Sixt is a German company that has its office about a mile outside of the airport. A shuttle picks you up and takes you there but there is always someone outside of the airport waiting to greet you. With Sixt, the price they quote you is the price you pay compared to other rental car agencies who either charge more or make you buy an insurance policy even though your credit card company already has rental car insurance which can more than double the quoted price. One thing I do recommend is that you take a GPS with you in order to be able to get around or study some maps of the streets that you're going to visit. Cancun does not label its streets very well so it can be hard to find some of the places that you plan to visit. Other than that, it was a great experience and I am looking forward to renting again from Sixt.
